Capital Loss Carryover Calculator

Estimate current-year capital-loss use, the ordinary-income offset, remaining capital-loss carryover, and illustrative tax savings.

Inputs

Capital-loss carryover inputs

Choose the tax year for the gains, losses, carryover, and deduction-limit assumptions. The calculator does not automatically look up annual limits.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter current-year gains that can absorb current-year losses and carryovers. Professional example: 5000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter current-year realized capital losses after basis and sale adjustments. Professional example: 12000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter the carryover shown on the prior-year tax records. Professional example: 2000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Enter ordinary income available for the capital-loss deduction after other applicable limits. Professional example: 80000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter the annual ordinary-income offset limit used for this estimate. Verify filing status, tax year, and the current IRS limit. Professional example: 3000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100 %

Enter the marginal rate used only to illustrate current-year tax savings. It is not a full bracket, NIIT, or state calculation. Professional example: 22. Edit this value for your own facts.

How to interpret this result
Current-year gains absorb the combined current-year losses and prior carryover first. Any remaining net capital loss is limited by both ordinary income available and the entered annual offset limit; the rest is carried forward.
Applicability and limits
This is a planning estimate for capital-loss ordering. It does not determine short-term versus long-term character, wash sales, filing-status limits, Schedule D worksheets, state tax, NIIT, or the indefinite carryover record.
Calculation basis
Total loss available = current-year losses + prior carryover. Net capital loss = max(total loss available − current-year gains, 0). Ordinary-income offset limit = min(ordinary income, annual loss limit). Current offset = min(net capital loss, ordinary-income offset limit). Carryover = net capital loss − current offset. Estimated savings = current offset × marginal tax rate.
