Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Estimate realized gain or loss, short-term and long-term taxable gain, capital-gains tax, and after-tax proceeds from a proposed sale.

Inputs

Capital gains inputs

Choose the tax year for the sale and rate assumptions. The calculator does not automatically look up federal or state thresholds.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter the gross amount received or expected from the sale. Professional example: 100000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter the adjusted basis after reinvested distributions, corporate actions, improvements, or other documented adjustments. Professional example: 60000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter commissions and other sale costs that reduce the amount realized. Professional example: 1000. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter the loss carryover you plan to apply against this gain. Verify the carryover schedule and character separately. Professional example: 0. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100,000 days

Enter the number of days between acquisition and sale. More than one year is modeled as long-term for this estimate; verify the actual dates and IRS holding-period rules. Professional example: 400. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100 %

Enter the ordinary-income rate assumption for a short-term gain. This is not a full bracket calculation. Professional example: 24. Edit this value for your own facts.

Range: 0–100 %

Enter the long-term rate assumption for a gain held more than one year. Verify taxable-income thresholds, filing status, NIIT, and state tax separately. Professional example: 15. Edit this value for your own facts.

Tax-year basis
The selected tax year identifies the sale and rate assumptions. The one-year holding-period threshold is modeled as a planning indicator, not a substitute for date-level review.
How to interpret this result
The calculator first computes gain or loss from proceeds, basis, and selling expenses, then applies the entered carryover. A holding period over one year routes the taxable gain to the long-term rate; otherwise it routes to the short-term rate.
Applicability and limits
This is a planning estimate for a single proposed sale. It does not determine tax lots, wash sales, qualified dividends, NIIT, state tax, collectibles or depreciation recapture, home-sale exclusions, employee equity rules, or the final treatment of a net loss.
Calculation basis
Gain or loss = proceeds − adjusted basis − selling expenses. Taxable gain after carryover = max(gain or loss − carryover, 0). The holding-period indicator is 1 when days exceed 365 and 0 otherwise. Estimated tax = short-term gain × short-term rate + long-term gain × long-term rate. Net proceeds after tax = proceeds − estimated tax.

What to check

  • An investor enters basis, proceeds, holding-period, lot, and tax-rate assumptions to estimate a transaction outcome before selling or exercising.
  • Use it before a sale, exercise, rebalance, tax-loss harvest, or crypto disposal.
  • This is a planning estimate for a single proposed sale. It does not determine tax lots, wash sales, qualified dividends, NIIT, state tax, collectibles or depreciation recapture, home-sale exclusions, employee equity rules, or the final treatment of a net loss.
