Adoption Tax Credit Calculator

Estimate the federal adoption credit under Form 8839 for one or more eligible children, including qualified expenses, special-needs adoption rules, employer benefits, MAGI phaseout, refundable credit, nonrefundable use, carryforward, and the 2025 carryforward transition.

Inputs

Credits & Deductions inputs

Select the federal tax year. The 2026 amounts use the IRS annual adjustment published for 2026; confirm final Form 8839 instructions before filing.

Range: 1–10 count

Enter the number of eligible children whose adoption credit is being estimated. The per-child limit and refundable cap are multiplied by this count.

Range: 0–10 count

Enter the number of eligible US children with a qualifying special-needs determination whose adoption became final in the selected year. This estimate caps the count at eligible children.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter qualified adoption expenses for eligible children other than the special-needs count above, after removing amounts already used for the same child in prior years. Do not include employer benefits entered below.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter qualified expenses already used for the same special-needs children in prior credit years. Enter 0 when none were used.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter employer adoption assistance applied to the same expenses. The calculator subtracts it to avoid claiming a credit and an exclusion for the same dollars.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter the Form 8839 modified AGI used for the adoption credit phaseout, not an unadjusted salary figure.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter the amount available for the nonrefundable adoption credit after the other applicable credit-limit worksheet items. This does not cap the refundable portion.

Range: 0–100,000,000 $

Enter only a still-available nonrefundable carryforward from prior years. Refundable credit cannot be carried forward.

How to interpret this result
This estimate separates the per-child credit base, MAGI phaseout, current-year refundable portion, 2025 carryforward transition refund, nonrefundable portion, current-year use, and remaining carryforward. It assumes the entered expenses are for eligible children and that prior carryforward amounts are supported by the applicable IRS worksheets.
Applicability and limits
This is a federal Form 8839 planning estimate for tax years 2025 or 2026. It does not determine whether a child is eligible, whether an adoption is domestic or foreign, which year an expense is claimable, whether a special-needs adoption was finalized, or whether a filing-status exception applies. The 2025 carryforward refund input is only for the IRS transition covering eligible 2020-2024 carryforwards; confirm Form 8839 and the carryforward worksheet before filing.
Calculation basis
Uses IRS Instructions for Form 8839 (2025), the IRS Adoption Credit guidance, and 2026 annual adjustments: maximum credit per eligible child is $17,280 for 2025 and $17,670 for 2026; phaseout starts at MAGI $259,190/$265,080 and is complete at $299,190/$305,080; up to $5,000 per eligible child is refundable for 2025 and up to $5,120 per eligible child for 2026. Qualified expenses are reduced by employer-provided adoption benefits. A qualifying U.S. special-needs adoption can use the per-child maximum even without current expenses, reduced by prior credit claimed for that child. Only the nonrefundable portion carries forward; for 2025, eligible 2020-2024 carryforwards are modeled separately under the temporary refundable transition.
